30 Years of Harvesting and Sharing
Fighting Food Insecurity
We feed the hungry by gathering surplus crops and unsold groceries for food distributors across San Diego County. Help us by volunteering, donating or both!
Glean Calendar Instructions
How do I sign up for a glean?
Click the “Harvests” button above.
- Enter your name and password. Enter the exact name and password you used when you first registered as a volunteer. Don’t remember? Contact info@seniorgleanerssdco.org.
- Click on “Glean Calendar.”
- Choose any available glean in the calendar.
- Click “Sign up.”
- Click “Sign up for this glean.”
- You will receive a confirmation email. If there are no open roster slots you can put your name on the waiting list in case of a cancellation.
How will I know where the glean is?
If you have signed up on the Glean Calendar rather than directly with the crew leader, you will see a page with the address of the glean and any other useful information, such as whether you need to wear thick trousers to protect you from stinging nettles, gate access codes. etc.
You’ll also receive an email with the same information and a link back to the web page. If you want to check your gleaning history or have the email resent, go to the Volunteer Toolbox tab at the top of this page and enter your password. The email and your Volunteer Toolbox are the only places the glean address appears. Write it down or print the email.
How do I cancel if I can’t make it?
If your schedule changes, please cancel. The email includes a link to cancel. Your courtesy helps us schedule enough volunteers for the available fruit and lets someone else attend.
When do I receive training and specific property information?
When you arrive at your first glean, we’ll provide safety training, helpful tips and answer your specific questions. At subsequent gleans we also share property information.
Who can attend gleans? Can I bring children?
Every adult who attends a glean must be a registered volunteer and must have signed up online or with their crew leader. Unregistered adults must complete a guest waiver. Children do not need to register or sign up but must be supervised by an adult who is on the roster. An adult must complete a waiver for children and closely supervise the child.
What should I do if my contact information changes?
If you are changing contact information such as your email address or phone number, go to the Volunteer Toolbox page and click on ‘Update.’ If you need to make a name change, write to info@seniorgleanerssdco.org.
Why won’t the sign-up page let me on the roster?
You may have typed your name differently than when you initially registered. If you are still unable to access the roster, email info@seniorgleanerssdco.org.
How are gleans planned?
We meet or speak with residents to discuss the property and logistics. The size of the volunteer roster is determined by: the amount of produce, the number of available volunteers, and parking space. Sometimes we are alerted that fruit is ripe and ready to be picked with very little warning.
