Help us NOW with picking and hauling!
We have had a tremendous response to recent advertising of our services. While all our region-based crews can use more volunteers, the East County group has the greatest need. Gleaners must be age 55, but guests over the age of 5 can join a crew after signing a waiver. Besides people to pick fruit, the group needs people with vehicles that can haul several filled banana boxes of fruit in their own vehicle. Most deliveries are within 10 miles of the pick. People who can’t pick, but are able to transport would be welcome. Gleaners is also starting a program to retrieve unsold groceries from smaller stores. Volunteers use their own vehicles and travel a route to several pickup points before delivering to a warehouse. Most Gleaners volunteer 3-4 hours one day per week, but there are no required minimum commitments.
PICK ME event helps fund our work
The third annual PICK ME! event, which commemorates Senior Gleaners' 26th anniversary this year, seeks donations and sponsors of individual volunteers during the week of April 6-12. We invite you to support our efforts to reduce food waste and help those in need by picking a volunteer, a crew or Senior Gleaners as a whole and makinig a financial donation. Funds will support our modest budget of $35,000, which primarily covers maintenance, fuel and insurance for our gleaner van and salary for our part-time general manager. Pledge level suggestions: Minimum wage in San Diego County is $13/hour. The average volunteer spends 4 hours on Gleaner tasks each week, so "wages" would equal $52. Or you may choose to give in increments of $26 to celebrate the Gleaner 26th Anniversary. Click here to obtain a PICK ME! donation form.
Order a Senior Gleaners shirt, cap or jacket to help fund our work and promote gleaning

Burton & Bastani named 2020 volunteers
Clairemont crew leader Margaret Burton and substitute leader Daryush Bastani received Volunteer of the Year awards from 2019 Board President Monte Turner in early 2020 for their extraordinary service. Besides crew leader duties, they custom designed and sold Gleaners apparel (see below) for volunteers. Both joined the board in the past year and both are financial supporters. They were the first to sign up for a new program to deliver grocery items. And they organized a holiday party for volunteers in December. "Give them a project and it's done quickly and completely," Turner said. "Their enthusiasm and energy is remarkable.
